Theodore Parker, one of the greatest abolitionists and preachers in the antebellum North participated in the defense. Anthony Burns, with a badly maimed hand, was claimed by a southern plantation owner as his own slave, based on a description of "dark complexion, about 6 feet, scar on left cheek, scar on right hand."
